What does LoRaWAN mean?

LoRaWAN is the abbreviation for Long Range Wide Area Network and covers the entire network setup.

LoRaWAN: Long Range Wide Area Network

LoRaWAN enables the energy-efficient transmission of data over longer distances. LoRaWAN was developed specifically for the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and is intended, for example, to enable sensors to operate for several years without changing batteries. LoRaWAN would thus significantly reduce the maintenance effort in IoT projects and enable the operation of devices even in rather inaccessible locations.

LoRaWAN also enables the management of several hundred sensors within a network and the processing of the associated sensor data.

Use cases for modern LoRaWAN radio technology

The applications in the Internet of Things are versatile. Accordingly, one technology alone is not sufficient to meet all planned scenarios. Thanks to its advantages, LoRaWAN is ideally suited for applications in which low data throughputs need to be transported as cost-effectively as possible, even in places where conventional mobile radio technologies cannot be used for networking.

One application example is meters for water, gas, electricity or heat(smart metering). LoRaWAN transmits the status of heat, gas or water meters by radio - then and as often as you want. For remote reading, a pulse-capable wMBus, Modbus or LoRaWAN meter is usually required. The remotely read meter readings are then transferred to your own systems via an interface.
